The Word of God

1. The word of God is “right” [yashar], which means it is “straight” and “upright.” It is true and can be trusted. So much religious literature cannot be trusted. No trust should, for example, should ever be placed in the Quran, the Book of Mormons, or Science and Health. But the Bible can be trusted. Psalms 33:4, “For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.”

2. The word of the Lord has intrinsic power to create. Psalms 33:6, “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”

3. The word of God has power to prevent sin. Psalms 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalms 119:33, “Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.”

4. The word of God can comfort. Psalms 119:50, “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.”

5. The word of God is immutable. Psalms 119:89, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.”

6. The word of God will guide. Psalms 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

7. The word of God will bring life. Psalms 119:116, “Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.”

8. The word of God is pure. Psalms 119:140, “Thy word is very pure: therefore, thy servant loveth it. Proverbs 30:5, “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”

9. The word of God is true. Psalms 119:160, “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”

10. The word of God brings hope. Psalms 130:5, “I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.”

11. God has magnified [gadal, esteemed, advanced, enlarged] His word. Psalms 138:2, “I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving-kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.”

12. The word of God shall always stand. Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

13. The word of God will never return void. Isaiah 55:11, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

14. It is possible to hear the word of God and not be affected by it. Matthew 13:22, “He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.” Mark 4:15, “And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.” Mark 4:19, “And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.”

15. It is possible to hear the word of God and receive it with good results. Matthew 13:23, “But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” Mark 4:20, “And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.”

16. The word of God is alive and powerful. Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

17. The word of God is able to save. James 1:21, “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”

18. The word of God will endure forever. 1 Peter 1:25, “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

19. God will honor those who have kept His word. Revelation 3:8, “I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.”

20. One of the names of Jesus is “The Word of God.” Revelation 19:13, “And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”

21. The word of God is worth dying for. Revelation 20:4, “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”
